The Hilltop Bank system in Wyoming experienced a ‘cybersecurity incident,’ prompting the bank to disconnect its systems from the internet to prevent further compromise. The bank announced on Tuesday that online and mobile banking services were interrupted, and debit card limits were raised to $1,000 per day to allow customers to make purchases. By Tuesday afternoon, the bank was still working to resolve the issue, offering updates and apologizing for the inconvenience.
On Wednesday, the bank closed all branches and offices due to an ongoing IT issue. It later confirmed a cybersecurity incident, with spokesman Bill Salvin stating that customers could still use up to $1,000 from debit cards daily or withdraw cash from ATMs. Automatic transfers, including payments for car and credit card bills, were suspended as the bank operated in offline mode.

True family, had previously acquired Cheyenne State Bank, reporting $1.11 billion in assets and managing over $1.7 billion in assets under management. The bank assured customers of procedures to restore full service once systems were confirmed secure. The incident followed recent cybersecurity breaches at Wyoming institutions, including a Judicial Branch database breach and delayed payments to Sweetwater County School District employees.
Customers reported difficulties accessing accounts and managing transactions, with some considering switching banks.
